Two former international champions who instruct at a Chorley fencing club are making sure students are “en garde” at a nearby college.

Students at Winstanley College are being taught the basics of sabre fencing by the instructors from the Rivington Park Fencing Club.

The eight week programme is being coached Belarusian sabre fencer Dmitry Lapkes, who has competed at four Olympic games and won silver in the team sabre event at the 2011 world fencing championships.

Also on hand is club coach Patrick Jennings, a cadet international sabre and epee fencer and former English Youth Champion.

The course, an enrichment opportunity for students at the college, was the idea of college sports tutor Alyson Hastie, who applied for Sportivate funding to run the event.

Alyson, said: “The aim was to try and target non-sporty students and get them active by giving them a taster of fencing in the hope they could get involved permanently and join a local club like Rivington Park.”
