A BLACKBURN-based charity has delivered 25 trucks, containing more than 650 tonnes of flour, to bakeries in Syria to provide bread for people in the disaster-struck country.

Since December, more than three million meals have been provided for Syrian refugees, in a unique project led by the East Lancashire charity, Al-Imdaad Foundation UK.

The charity recognised the Syrian people’s staple diet of bread, and so chose to provide flour over other food products.

When the project launched, a deleg-ation from the foundation went out to visit the country, led by Blackburn May-or Coun Salim Mulla.

International projects co-ordinator Zubair Valimulla, who also went on the trip, said: “We are a people charity and will assist the Syrian refugees with their immediate requirements.

“Recognising bread as their staple diet, we will continue every month with this flour appeal.

“I would like to thank all the donors, nationally and globally, for their ster-ling efforts in responding to this fant-astic appeal.

“Thanks to your generosity, Al-Imdaad Foundation UK has been able to save countless lives, and improve many others.

“However, our work is never done and, as the conflict continues, we will make further efforts to reach out to even more people.”

According to the UN refugee agency, more than two million Syrians are now registered as refugees.

And a further 4.25million have been displaced within Syria.

An estimated six million people in Syria are in need of food assistance, as supplies in the country are running low.

In December, the Lancashire Telegraph reported how the charity had help-ed raise almost £500,000 to build a self-contained vill-age for victims of the conflict.

Al-Imdaad Foun-dation has offices in South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, and Jordan, and a UK base in Blackburn.
