THE author of a recipe book is challenging the boys of Bolton to make a simple Valentine’s Day treat for their partner using one of her classic 100-year-old recipes.

Pat Matthews, pictured, of Longfield Road, Bolton, says her coconut ice dessert will be the “icing on the cake” for couples across the borough celebrating the most romantic day of the year.

The white and pink sweet does not involve any cooking, and only a few ingredients are needed, along with a bit of creativity and elbow grease from the willing man.

Mrs Matthews’ book, Grandma’s Antique Recipes, features traditional dishes by Grandma Sarah, dating back a century, as well as a history of Bolton.

Mrs Matthews said: “My coconut ice challenge is a modern slant on a traditional recipe dating back to the ’50s and ’60s. I have used Grandma Sarah’s original cube-shaped style as well as a heart and round shape to make it look that extra bit special.

“There is no cooking involved to make the sweets — all you need is a few boxes and sweet wrappers to hold them in.”

Grandma’s Antique Recipes can be bought from Waterstones and Amazon, with a donation from every book going to The Christie cancer hospital in Manchester.

The book is also available to read at the Bolton Library and History Centre.
