THE dreams of a family were realised when they saw the completion of their refurbished home in Bury — thanks to the makers of BBC show DIY SOS.

The TV team, supported by an incredible 89 tradesmen, undertook the major revamp to make life easier for six-year-old Maddie Malone and her parents Michelle and Rod.

Their home in Caton Close was transformed after eight days of hard graft that saw the completion of their unfinished downstairs extension, a new kitchen built, and a bedroom and wet room built for Maddie.

Last Thursday, the Malones were shown round their new-look home.

Presenter Nick Knowles told The Bury Times: “The house is perfect for the Malones. They are over the moon with how it looks. It will make a huge difference to the whole family — Maddie has got her own space and they will be able to live in a safe environment.

“All the people who have worked on this show deserve medals. They have been extraordinary.”

Michelle and Rod moved into their home along with their two other girls Keelea and Anais, in 2012 with the intention of providing downstairs living facilities for Maddie.

She suffers from the neurological disorder dystonia, which causes sustained muscle contractions, as well as an undiagnosed brain disease. She has problems with her speech and digestion, and has lost much of the use of her legs and arms.

However, things at the house had not gone to plan, and the family were left with an unfinished extension and five of them living in three rooms.

Paul Smith, managing director of ABC Concrete Direct Limited in Warrington, who supplied the concrete for the show, said: “It’s so sad to see a family in that situation. We are the fortunate ones and we have to look after the ones who are less fortunate.”

Neil Summerton, contracts manager for Eric Wright Construction in Bamber Bridge, Preston, who provided bricks, paving and joinery work, said: “The last couple of weeks have been pressured, but very rewarding and enjoyable.

"We wanted to get involved as this family’s story was so heart-warming. Everyone’s done a great job and this place looks fantastic.”

No date has yet been set for the airing of this episode of DIY SOS.
