Bury Sing First Choir hits the right note at Royal Northern College of Music
A BURY choir certainly proved “on song” by taking part in a prestigious concert at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music.
Youngsters from the Bury Sing First Choir were among nine musical ensembles which took part in the event, organised by the Greater Manchester Music Hub.
Each choir represented their own authority and Bury Sing First comprises pupils who are nearing the end of primary education, and those in high school.
The Bury choir and its counterparts in Greater Manchester are being funded for one year by Youth Music.
Mrs Katie Geelan, musical director of the Bury Sing First, said: “The choir is open to anyone who enjoys singing and comprises youngsters between nine and 15.
“Since we started around last October, the choir has slowly built up and the children have been able to improve their vocal skills while meeting new friends and taking part in events like the one at the Royal Northern College of Music.”
Bury Sing First performed Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and Adele’s Make You Feel My Love as well as taking part in massed singing with the other choirs on stage.
Mrs Geelan, who is head of the Bury Music Collab-orative, is involved in weekly rehearsals with the choir at Derby High School.
She added: “The young-sters are now so quick at picking things up and respond well to different styles of music.”
Bury Sing First choir has several performances lined up, including the Bury Hospice School Choir of the Year event.
