A SECOND hurdle faced by the promoters of Burnley’s first ‘micro-pub’ could be overcome later this week.

Nottinghamshire-based James Mansfield is hopeful of opening up the Beer Shack in Manchester Road, opposite the Big Window.

Last week he secured a licence for the venture, despite opposition from neighbouring solicitor Stuart Smith, who has offices over the premises.

And now Mr Mansfield is attempting to gain planning permission for the former hair salon to become a no-frills real-ale emporium.

Opposition has again been forthcoming, from at least two neighbours, who have complained that ‘anti-social language’ and noise from the proposed micro-pub would disturb them.

The critics have raised concerns about brewing on the site but been assured there are no plans for that activity on site.

A Burnley Council planning officer said in a report: “The intent is to provide customers with real ale, real cider, wines and soft drinks, creating a conversational, pub atmosphere, without provision of music and entertainment.”

The plans have formally been recommended for approval and the borough’s development control committee will make a final ruling on Thursday.
