AN ELDERLY man has been injured after a burglar smashed the front window of his bungalow in Breightmet.

Police say the thief fled with a "quantity of jewellery" after the break-in at about 8.20am in Foster Lane this morning.

The 83-year-old man was taken to hospital with a hand injury.

His 80-year-old wife was also in the house during the burglary and made the call to police.

No arrests have been made and police are still carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.

A police spokesperson said: "Our inquiries into this incident are ongoing."
