A FIGHT to keep Tyldesley Library going is being helped by donations — from a scrabble club.

Doris Critchley, aged 77, started the group when she took her scrabble board to a crossword club and sparked the interest of some of the library’s patrons.

She was told she could not charge for the club but could collect donations for the Friends of Tyldesley Library group and has now passed the £1,000 mark.

She said: “I saw the sign for the crossword club and thought I would go along, even though it seemed strange because you do a crossword on your own.

“One day I brought my board in and other people in the library asked if they could join in.

“I have a margarine tub that everyone pops a pound in and it helps to fund some of the events the group holds.

“I am chuffed we have raised so much, we all are.”

The club meets every Friday afternoon from 1pm until 5pm at the library.
