BOLTON’S new transport interchange has moved a step nearer, as the last building earmarked for demolition has now been knocked down.

Builders worked from 11pm until 5am, between Monday and Tuesday, to reduce the old Cash Store, on the corner of Newport Street and Great Moor Street, to rubble.

Cranes and diggers continue to work on the site, which will be the new home of the £48 million bus station.

It will link to the existing train station via an enclosed pedestrian footbridge.

A spokesman for Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said the official date for the start of work on the new building has not yet been announced, but they hope the project will be finished by 2015.

Properties in Newport Street, Great Moor Street and Johnson Street have been demolished to make way for a new bus interchange.

During the demolition period, temporary fencing has been put up along the roads, with the closure of the footpath linking Johnson Street and Newport Street.

Cllr David Chadwick, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We are very fortunate that TfGM and its partners have footed the bill for this fabulous development.

“We are going in the right direction now and we are coming to the end of the demolition period.”
