PLANS for a new railway users group have gone down in flames - but a Friends of Bolton Station group could rise from the ashes.

Preva Crossley and Derek Bullock held a public meeting in Westhoughton to kickstart the Along The Right Lines: Northern Communities Together community group.

They envisaged that the new group would unite railway users across Bolton and Wigan to clamour for more carriages and an end to overcrowding.

But attendees voted to instead create a forum for existing railway Friends groups - including Hindley, Daisy Hill, Westhoughton and Walkden in Salford - which would meet four times a year on joint issues.

And Mr Crossley vowed to begin efforts to start a Friends of Bolton Station group, to represent the hundreds of commuters who faced overcrowded services at peak times.

The Bolton News launched the Let's Get Back On Track calling for better services for rail users.
