A MAN has died after a BMW sports car overturned in Edenfield.

Three others were also injured in the incident which happened just before midnight on Tuesday.

The dark blue BMW M5, which was carrying four passengers, overturned as it travelled towards Edenfield in Rochdale Road, near Fecit Lane.

A 40-year-old man from Rochdale, who was the front seat passenger, suffered fatal injuries.

The 29-year-old driver of the vehicle, from Moss Side in Manchester, was left with a broken wrist, arm and elbow.

Two back seat passengers, a 23-year-old and a 24-year-old, both men from Rochdale, suffered minor injuries.

Police say no other vehicles were involved in the crash, and that they want to speak to anyone who saw the car before it happened.

Sgt Jon Allwright, from the police's traffic unit, said: “Sadly as a result of this accident a man sustained fatal injuries and we have deployed specialist family liaison officers to support the family and our thoughts are with them at this time.

“Three others, including the driver were treated for lesser injuries at hospitals in Manchester.

“An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened but we are anxious to trace any vehicles that were travelling along Rochdale Road last night that either saw the accident occur or saw the car involved, a BMW M5 registered number MW13 YYX.

“We’re also keen to speak with anyone that may have seen the car travelling in or around the Rochdale area and would ask them to contact Lancashire Police on 101 quoting log 1397.”

The road is closed on while police investigate the cause of the crash.
