Darwen residents call for action over driver grass damage

This Is Lancashire: An example of the damage to the grass verges on the Anchor Estate An example of the damage to the grass verges on the Anchor Estate

RESIDENTS on a Darwen estate have called for action to be taken over motorists ruining grass verges and making the pavement and road a mess.

The road around the Anchor Estate has grass verges either side, but residents have complained that drivers constantly drive over them when parking their cars.

This, they said, causes problems particularly in the wet winter months when the mud is easily churned up under the wheels.

One resident said: “I have been on to the council about this for the past three years.

“People drive on the grass verges and ruin them.

“If someone just went and took a walk around the estate, they could see the damage being done.

“It doesn’t just ruin the verges, either, it sprays mud all over the pavement and the road.

“That could be dangerous if someone slipped on it.

“I have lived on the estate for four decades and it has never been as bad as it is now.”

Earcroft councillor Trevor Maxfield said: “I have had quite a few complaints to me over the years about this.

“When the Anchor Estate was built, there just weren’t as many cars around and I think it is as simple as that.

“We could perhaps look at putting in more parking bays, similar to what Twin Valley Homes did around Birch Hall.”

Coun Jim Smith, Black-burn with Darwen Council’s executive member for environment, said: “The grass verges are part of the original design of the Anchor Estate.

“An inspection has taken place on the estate and an order has been raised, to soil and seed grass verges in various places.

“The inspector who carried out checks could not find any actionable footway defects that needed repairing. Residents with illegal vehicle crossings have been written to.”

I wish them well in their efforts but in truth they have less chance than a snowflake would when it fell on a bonfire.I have fought this battle for years. All around me are verges that have been turned into ploughed fields by vehicles of every description. There is also a major roundabout where an artic overturned and created ruts like the Grand Canyon but are the powers that be interested, are they heck. Mind you if there was a royal visit, they would soon get it done.

Dig the grass up and put some gravel down. It's pointless trying to fight something like this. Get practical.

I live in Australia where we have the same problems with careless people without the thought of others do the same thing. I don't know if it is the same there but most of the culprits those who drive the big 4 wheel drives. They think they have the license to plough over everything in their way. These cars were originally ment for off road but this horrible trend that everyone must have one is insane and they usually guzzle petrol so whats the point. Also try coming to an intersection again most of them don't care that others in more suitable care can't see, they will come after you did and block your view instead of waiting back until you have gone off safely. Getting back to the verges when there is no parking where they want to go why don't they park and walk the extra distance, they may get some neccesary exercise.

Another of the problems here is that many of the car drivers just park on the grass outside their houses without bothering to park on the road a bit further away - oh no, we can,t we expect them to actually WALK more that a few paces if they can get right outside their own house! Yes, I know it's a nuisance parking further, but what nuisance if other people end up injured because of this inconsideration . . . plus the unsightly looks

Wake up .

The problem is that is obviously very difficult to park .

So turn the area shown in the photo into a large car park .

Hang on a minute !

Given that most of the residents are on bennyfitz how can they afford cars ?

Ah - because the males sell illegal substances , the females sell ,
well , what else fo they have to offer ?

Better solution - ship the whole lot back up to The Gorbals .

Flatten the place .
- crime goes down.
- unemployment goes down .
- bennyfitz bill goes down .
- Darwen becomes a nicer place to live .

RESULT !!

My property company could get several starter homes on some of these grass verges (Just the larger ones obviously) If the Anchor 'residents' want to stop unsightly grass damage AND have something nicer to look at from their badly decorated living rooms then perhaps I should make an offer for the unused land....

What is wrong with people?! is the art of conversation and communicating with your neighbours completely lost? clearly the people complaining, are complaining about OTHER PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE! Why on earth bleat and moan to the police and papers when this 'Should' be an easy problem to sort with a bit of neighbourly compassion? Oh... wait... this is on the Anchor Estate where you get bottled for 'looking at someone funny' Ive lived on such an estate in the past, my home was watched and broken into within hours of me being taken to hospital in labour... Typical 1st World problem with people are too dumb, too ignorant, too arrogant and too hostile to sort out for themselves in an amicable way.

This comment is very prejudice against the locals who live on anchor estate. Me as being one of them, you are being very judgemental! For one, not everyone on anchor are on 'benefitz' and the estate is not as bad as it seems. Yes alot of people do the wrong thing.

Your comment is very immature and selfless. You need to seriously get a grip.
