A cake lover challenged friends, family and fellow churchgoers to get busy in the kitchen and whip up some tasty treats for a good cause.

The response to Charlotte Evans’s appeal was spectacular as more than 100 people called into Longsight Methodist Church in Harwood, on Saturday and donated their culinary creations to a huge charity sale.

Several hundred others flocked to The Great Bolton Bake Aid sale to grab some pre-Christmas bargains and Charlotte, of Bradshaw, said they helped raise about £500 for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in The Philippines.

“Wow! What a response,” she said after packing away dozens of cake dishes after the event.

Charlotte, who is a 32-year-old marketing manager, added: “We had brownies, chocolate chip cakes, mince pies, malt loafs and so much more besides. There were more than 100 cakes, all different types.”

Charlotte added: “I have travelled a lot across Asia and, when you think of the poverty that some of the people there live in, it makes you realise that, when they have little to start with, it’s tragic when it’s taken away for them. That’s why I picked this worthy cause.”
