Prime Minister David Cameron speaks to The Bolton News

This Is Lancashire: David Cameron with editor Ian Savage and political reporter Elaine O'Flynn David Cameron with editor Ian Savage and political reporter Elaine O'Flynn

THE Prime Minister David Cameron has visited The Bolton News to discuss the government’s plans to electrify the rail network in Bolton and beyond.

It follows today’s news that the railway line between Bolton and Wigan will receive £37 million of investment to electrify the line.

Mr Cameron also discussed town centre investment, business rates and the so-called ‘bedroom tax’.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced today that the line from Bolton to Wigan North Western — which goes through Westhoughton, Hindley and Ince — will be upgraded as part of a national push for rail electrification.

A DfT spokesman said the government was investing record amounts to modernise the network across England and help areas like Bolton.

More follows.

They should reopen the platform at Lostock so that people from Lostock can get the extra benefit of trains to Wigan and beyond. That would not cost them that much and would help with overcrowding.

That money spent on electrification of line to wigan rwould be better spent on a new tram link from Bolton to Manchester.
Why didnt you talk to PM about the BEN campiagn to improve train service to Manchester.
Additionally the north urgently needs better train links accross the country from Leeds to Liverpool via Manchester.

A tram line would be a lot more expensive and would take a lot longer to build.

Transpennine will be launching a new Liverpool to Leeds service via Manchester Victoria next year with Class 185's cascaded from their Scottish services.

Well I can't speak for you about your ability to pay fuel bills but I for one care about the massive improvements that are going on in our public transport.

Also don't underestimate the Conservatives continuing popularity. They got 35% of the vote at the last general election and are currently averaging 33% in opinion polls.

Of course I care. I like to think I care more about this town and its people than most on this website. In an election I would only consider voting Conservative or UKIP. Yeh the Conservative party has been losing members as it has been doing so for a long time while Labour's membership is very slowly rising sadly.

Additionally the north urgently needs better train links accross the country from Leeds to Liverpool via Manchester.
Bolton could do with a direct link to Old Trafford as there are many people who work on that side of Manchester and other than taking two trains to get there, the only other thing to do is to drive. It would cut down the traffic on the M61 and M602.

The Leeds to Liverpool link you talk about, actually was and is covered by the "Northern Hub" which was to connect Liverpool to Hull via Leeds and Manchester by rail, primarily for freight but public access would also be part of the plan. Unfortunately this was a Labour plan that has been shelved.
