Renewed concerns have been raised about a notorious Summerseat road which has caused traffic chaos for a number of years.

Bass Lane is regularly used by commuters heading to and from the M66.

One car driver snapped a picture of an articulated lorry attempting to travel down the road last Wednesday at about 11.15am, which caused tailbacks.

The witness, who asked not to be named, said the HGV driver was quizzed why he was using the road, and said he was directed that way by his sat-nav when delivering supplies to Summerseat Garden Centre.

There is also a sign at the top of Bass Lane which states no vehicles over the weight of three-and-a-half tonnes should use the road.

The car driver said: “When I first got to the bottom, about three cars waited for a long time, which was unusual because the main rush hour traffic is gone and people using it at that time are usually locals.

“The car in front went to have a look and he saw the lorry coming down.

“I said to the driver, if you go down here you are not going to have anywhere to go, as there is a low railway bridge down there.”

Signs had previously been installed calling on drivers to travel down the lane two at a time, instead of in threes and fours or more, which caused blockages in the road.

It is believed these signs were erected by residents, and have since been removed by Bury Council as they are illegal, with only signs accepted by relevant legislation allowed to be displayed on adopted highways.

Cllr Dorothy Gunther, who represents North Manor, says the problem has only got worse during her 25 years living in the area. She said: “If everybody is sensible, Bass Lane works, but unfortunately everybody isn’t sensible, and invariably people go down in threes and fours which causes blockages.

“I know the council gave an official reason for removing these polite signs. It is always difficult when they are breaking the law, but you think they could have turned a blind eye.”
