HEALTH bosses in Blackburn with Darwen have challenged residents to avoid alcohol in January.
They launched the ‘Dry January’ campaign at Cafe Hub in Darwen on Monday.
Local councillors, public health representatives and council staff heard from Alcohol Concern about the challenge for people to stay alcohol-free for the month.
It aims is to start new conversations about alcohol use and the risk of regular drinking.
New figures show the cost of alcohol misuse in the borough is £62m annually, or £424 per person.
Signatories to the ‘Dry January’ website can share their experiences of going ‘dry’ with others.
Council health boss Mohammed Khan said: “Problem drinking has a huge impact. Dry January gives people the chance to reflect on alcohol intake.
“Going hangover-free means a rejuvenated start to 2014 with better sleep and fewer headaches. There are lots of health benefits and you’ll save a small fortune.”
