A HIGH school pupil is getting ready to say “goodbye” to her long locks to raise funds for a cancer charity.

Jessica Swain, aged 14, of Derwent Avenue, Whitefield, plans to have her hair shaved on Friday, December 13, in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, which aims to improve the quality of life and chances of survival for young people with cancer.

Jessica has not set a fundraising target, but said raising awareness of cancer is the most important thing.

The inspiration came from her namesake star, who had her hair shaved off. Jessica said: “I saw Jessie J do it recently. Quite a few people have done it on Facebook as well. I’m lucky to have the decision to have hair, but there are many who do not have this choice.”

Jessica’s head shave will be performed by a professional hairdresser in front of staff and pupils at Parrenthorn High School in Prestwich.

Jessica says she is relishing the chance to promote a good cause. She said: “I’ve thought about it a lot and I think it’s the right thing to do.

“It’s important to raise awareness of cancer, especially for people who feel alone. People may get the treatment but they might not feel like they’re getting the help and support they need to get through cancer. I hope what I’m doing will send out the message to teenagers to keep strong and not be scared to be different.”

Mother Louise said: “I’m absolutely amazed by Jessica. I always knew she was going to make a difference to the world in some way.”
