ON your marks, get set — bake!
A Great British Bake Off fan is looking for ‘Star Bakers’ to help her raise money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
Charlotte Evans, aged 32, wants to help the four million Filipinos who have been forced to leave their homes since the cyclone hit the country earlier this month — but needs help from other volunteers from Bolton.
The marketing manager has set up The Great Bolton Bake Aid — a spin on the popular BBC Two programme fronted by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood — and needs 200 amateur bakers to bake a cake to sell in slices on December 14 at Harwood Methodist Church Hall.
All funds raised will go towards the Philippines Appeal.
Miss Evans, who spent a number of years travelling around Asia and living in Australia, has experienced three smaller typhoons herself, and says she cannot imagine what they have been through.
Miss Evans, from Bradshaw, said: “I’ve never been to the Philippines but I have spent a lot of time working and travelling through Asia.
“I also lived in Australia for seven years and have been through three different cyclones in my time there — and although they weren’t anywhere near as devastating as Typhoon Haiyan, it was still terrifying. So I can’t imagine what the Filipino victims are going through.”
Her idea was inspired by the hit TV show Great British Bake Off, where a number of keen bakers battle it out to be the overall winner.
Miss Evans said: “I’ve even had a former Great British Bake Off contestant, Deborah, tweet me to say good luck.
“There are already 35 bakers registered, but I’m aiming for at least 150 to 200 if possible.
“The idea is that the people who register will all bake a cake and then come to the church hall on December 14 and we’ll display them all together and hopefully sell all the cakes in slices.
“Anything goes, cakes, tray bakes, tarts and cupcakes — anything.
“If a business would like to donate something then we will acknowledge them too.”
