Drain block flood alert in Darwen

DARRENERS have been warned to watch out for leaves blocking drains and culverts.
With trees shedding their foliage for winter, the town’s Flood Watch has called for people to keep a sharp eye out for debris which increase the risk of floods.
Culverts are a major part of the drainage system in the UK with the river Darwen running mostly in culvert throughout the town.
If a culvert becomes blocked, or even partially blocked, then the flow of water is restricted even further and can cause a flood.
Leaves and branches, especially in the autumn, cause blockages at culvert entrances very quickly and mud, silt and tree branches can build up over time.
Marsh House councillor Tom Evans said: “Flood Watch wants residents to know who to report any blockages to so that the risk of floods can be quickly shifted.
“But there are ways that residents can help themselves, like sweeping away any rubbish or leaves from drains before they become blocked.”
