YOUNGSTERS got their thinking caps on to become inventors for the day at Bolton Museum.

The museum in Le Mans Crescent saw the return of its ‘Super Saturday’ event, bearing a Samuel Crompton theme to tie in with the 260th anniversary of Samuel Crompton’s birth on December 3.

Staff encouraged children to make their own inventions, and some of the ideas included a machine to complete homework and a dancing robot who was always ready to party.

Lesley Openshaw, collections and access officer for the library and learning, dressed as Samuel Crompton’s mother and told visitors to the museum about the life of the spinning mule inventor.

She said: “All of the children seem to know lots about Samuel Crompton already as they learn about him in school.

“I have been telling people I am Samuel’s mother and that I am very proud of him as he was working since he was 10 years old.

“I have been talking about his life, how young he was, how he invented the spinning mule and how he died without any money.

“Visitors were also told about how Richard Arkwright stole his invention.”

Children at the event also made pom poms and woolly sheep and held objects where they were able to feel and learn about homes in Bolton, which included birds’ nests.

A craft fair also took place at the museum.
