UPDATED: Neighbours hear screams as fire rips through house in Halliwell
Firefighters and police are at the scene of the blaze, which is thought to have started just before 4pm at a mid-terrace house in Louisa Street, Halliwell.
Firefighters have put out the fire but crews are still inside. No one is believed to have been harmed.
Neighbours described hearing loud screams and seeing people fleeing from nearby houses.
One resident of Louisa Street, who did not want to be named said: "I could hear women screaming and then I just saw two people running into the street carrying babies, it was terrible."
Another local resident, Jack Atherton, said: "The fire was massive and I could see the window dangling off. There were big flames blazing from the house."
It is thought a man, named locally as Malcolm, lives in the house but was not in at the time of the blaze.
The incident happened before planned strike action by firefighters, who are due to walk out from 6.30pm to 11.30pm tonight in protest at government plans that will force them to work until the age of 60.
