Darwen police to target number plate thefts

OFFICERS from Darwen’s neighbourhood policing team will be on the market rooftop car park giving out tamper-proof screws to prevent number plate thefts later this month.
The move comes in a bid to stop thieves taking number plates from cars and using them to avoid being caught stealing fuel.
Police will also give advice to motorists during the event, on Friday, October 25, from 10am to 2pm.
Neighbourhood police Sgt Dave Sherrington said: “We get people stealing plates, attaching them to a car and filling up with petrol then driving off and dumping the plate.
“With these screws, you can screw them in but not unscrew them without a special tool.
“We have not had a lot of these cases reported in Darwen but we want to make people feel safer.
“It is about helping the garages as well.”
