BONFIRE organisers are urged to register their events ahead of Guy Fawkes night.
The annual bonfire registration scheme has been launched in Burnley by the borough’s Community Safety Partnership (CSP), aimed at organisations holding fires on public land.
The registration scheme has been running for several years and has been successful in cutting the number of call-outs by the fire service to ‘nuisance’ fires during its busiest time of the year.
Anyone organising a bonfire on public land is urged to register their event. In return, they will get professional support to help make sure the event goes safely and no-one is injured, including a site inspection.
Fires must be registered by 5pm on Thursday, October 31.
Councillor Tony Harrison, the council’s executive member for community services, said: “The bonfire registration scheme has made a positive impact in reducing the number of nuisance fires that often are simply youngsters piling up whatever they can get hold of and setting it alight.
“It means firefighters are available to deal with more serious incidents.”
Bonfires can be registered at www.burnley.gov.uk/bonfire.
