Driver damages several street signs on rampage through The Haulgh
A STONE plaque commemorating The Haulgh In Bloom was thrown 12ft down the road and two street signs damaged by a motorist who crashed and did not stop.
Firefighters from Bolton Fire Station were called to the accident at the junction of Castle Street and Radcliffe Road at about 1.20am last night.
The driver of a Renault Megane Sport flattened one sign, bent another and moved the plaque before abandoning his vehicle and fleeing.
Residents from nearby houses called firefighters because they saw what they believed to be smoke and thought the car was on fire, but it turned out to be powder from the air bags going off.
Police have been searching the nearby area with a sniffer dog, but the driver has still not been found.
No other vehicles were involved, police said.
