PET owners certainly weren’t slow in coming forward for the latest tortoise “weigh-in” held at the Wilkinson store in Bury.
The twice-yearly event is staged by the British Chelonia Group (BCG) to check the health of the area’s tortoises and turtles.
BCG northern region chairman John Thorpe, together with Ian and Gillian Mostyn from Tottington-based Pennine Vets, examined 38 of the hard-shelled pets on the day, checking size, weight and condition while offering free advice and attention.
Owners the borough, as well as from Oldham, Bolton, Rawtenstall, Rochdale and Moston attended and the organisers were delighted at the response to the event which has taken place in Bury regularly for more than 20 years.
Mr Thorpe said: “Tortoises are still very popular pets, with many more being bred in captivity nowadays. But they are often still badly cared for and do not achieve their lifespan of 80 to 100-plus years.”
