DRIVERS faced major disruption on the M66 this morning after a woman who was reportedly walking in the road was hit by a car.
The accident happened on the slip road at junction 2, Heap Bridge, at about 5.40am.
The woman was taken to Hope Hospital with serious injuries but was said to be conscious and breathing.
One lane of the motorway and the slip road were closed for about two hours, causing long tailbacks for commuters at rush hour.
The motorway and slip road were fully reopened at about 8am.
A Highways Agency spokesman said: "We can't speculate about exactly what happened but it appears this woman may have been walking in the road.
"We would urge everyone to avoid walking in the middle of roads - it is illegal and should only happen in the event of a breakdown."
