Campaign to encourage children to read launched in Chorley
A campaign has been launched to encourage schoolchildren and their parents to use the county’s library service.
The You Are What You Read, campaign features images of children wearing cartoon hats symbolising aspirational careers – an airline pilot, surgeon and academic.
County Coun Marcus Johnstone, cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: “The campaign aims to drive home to parents just how important libraries are in giving children the information and knowledge they need to fulfil their potential.
“There are proven links between reading for pleasure and academic achievement and it is crucial that we ensure that children get into the habit of reading and using libraries.”
Julie Bell, head of the county library service, said: “Books remain the backbone of what we do but today’s library service offers so much more. Families can get so much from visiting the library, from access to a world of information to fun events such as family sharing sessions. And it’s so much cheaper than most other activities.”
