ACCRINGTON Crematorium’s aging facilities cost council tax payers nearly £6,000 last month.
A new air fan was installed to the tune of £5,158, while an emergency call out to the ash processor cost £369.
A new door cost £430 and general maintenance work cost a further £274.60, figures released by Hyndburn Council showed.
The council announced plans to replace the cremators, which are coming to the end of their lifespan, when almost £5,000 was spent on emergency call-outs and maintenance between May and July.
The replacement would cost around £1 million, it is believed.
The crematorium, in Burnley Road, has held more than 46,000 cremations since 1956.
Past increases in the prices of services, including a 150 per cent hike in the cost of scattering ashes earlier this year, have been labelled a ‘death tax’ by critics.
However, at £540, a service at Accrington is still cheaper than Blackburn and Burnley.
