A MAN was found to have hidden a phone in his body while about to begin a two-month jail sentence.
Atif Mahmood, 33, of Bank House Road, Nelson, claimed he had been “pressured” into committing the offence.
Sending him back to jail for 18 weeks, District Judge Jonathon Finestein, sitting at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court. said: “This sort of offence is regarded as extraordinarily serious by the authorities.
“It allows inmates to carry on their illegal activities without being detected.
“I have no doubt mobile phones are worth their weight in gold and are prized by criminals in custody.”
Mahmood had pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a phone while in custody in July.
Prosecutor Matthew Siddall said phones were being sold for between £400 and £600 in prison.
Mahmood was originally jailed for driving offences and the court heard he had 51 previous convictions.
