AN insight into waste treatment in Bolton is being offered for free as part of a new round of heritage open days with a difference.

The events, organised by English Heritage, aim to celebrate architecture and culture by giving people free access to sites not usually open to the public, or those which would normally charge an entrance fee.

Billed as England’s biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event, organisers said it provides an opportunity to explore some of the “hidden gems” in English cities, towns and villages.

As part of the drive, Recycle for Greater Manchester will be offering tours next Friday, September 13, of the thermal recovery facility and visitor centre in Raikes Lane. The tours run at 10am and 2pm and are free to Bolton residents.

Jennifer Baker, communications manager, said: “This is a unique opportunity for anyone curious about what happens to their waste once it’s collected, to get a rare glimpse behind the scenes at our landfill site and thermal recovery facility.

“At these power plants we release the energy from waste and each one produces enough electricity to power about 7,000 homes.

“We know that people are increasingly interested in reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill and we hope that by coming and seeing what happens at our site they will go away inspired to recycle more and waste less.”

The tour will last two hours and places are limited with anyone interested being urged to book early by calling 01204 374222 or emailing education@recyclefor greatermanchester.com.
