WORK has begun on the refurbishment of some of Burnley town centre’s most iconic buildings.
Scaffolding has gone up at the front of Burnley Town Hall, as well as the Mechanics Theatre next door, as engineers begin to assess upgrades on the site.
Work will include checking the masonry, stonework and windows of the listed building and touching up paintwork.
The refurbishment is due to continue until October and certain parts of the buildings will be obscured by scaffolding until then.
The former Mechanics Institute was designated a Grade Two listed building by English Heritage in September, 1977, classifying it as a ‘particularly important building of more than special interest’.
