A BURY taxi firm owner has gone the “extra mile” for disabled Bury boy Joshua Wilson’s new brain tumour charity.

Ray Porter has raised around £1,250 for the 13-year-old after successfully completing the Three Peaks Challenge and staging a memorial golf day.

Mr Porter, who runs the Harvey’s taxi business, undertook the Three Peaks Challenge along with his daughter Chantelle.

Father and daughter overcame gusts of up to 75mph to successfully scale Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon within a 24-hour period to raise £500 for Joshua.

Later, a further £750 was generated by the third annual John Porter Memorial Golf Day held at Bury Golf Club. John, Mr Porter’s brother, died from cancer three years ago.

Explaining why he decided to raise money for the youngster, who attends Elms Bank High School in Whitefield, Mr Porter said: “We wanted to raise money for a local charity and decided to do so for ‘Super Josh’ after seeing him on TV and then realising that he was taken to school by a colleague with the taxi firm.”

Meanwhile, manager of the Bury’s Lloyds Pharmacy in Derby Way, Mr Jahn Dad Khan, has raised £200 from staff, customers and neighbours after he completed a 15-mile run.

He said: “We are a local pharmacy and this is a local cause. Although national charities have a lot of sponsors and support, the small, local charities are often overlooked.”

The money is going to the newly launched Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity, set up to coincide with the youngster’s 13th birthday.

During this month and next, an ambitious “Challenge 13” initiative is taking place UK-wide involving a series of fundraising events.

Trustees hope to raise £13,000 by the end of September which will be used to improve the lives of children, like Joshua, with brain tumours and post surgery disabilities, with advice, support and financial solutions.

The first “Challenge 13” event was a fundraising day hosted by the team at Barclays Bank in St Ann’s Square, Manchester.

The event included a name-the-bear competition, cake sale, tombola and 250km static bike ride.

The Barclays team was joined by Greater Manchester Fire Service and a Prince’s Trust team and the event raised a total of £1,500.

And a further £1,000 has also been raised by Sgt Corinne Price from Oakhampton who undertook a sky dive, despite the fact the police officer is scared of heights.

Patron of the brain tumour charity is TV presenter Kay Burley.

She and Joshua recently met up and the teenager’s mum, Dawn, said: “Josh loved meeting her and was made up with his Batman birthday present.”
