Four injured and residents warned to stay inside after chemical leak
Paramedics had to treat four people for “stinging eyes” and many others complained of the smell.
It is understood the leak originated from a refrigerator unit at Peter Hunt’s Bakery in Lyon Road, Kearsley.
The alarm was raised at about 10.40pm on Monday, when residents in Blackleach Drive, Walkden, called the fire service complaining of a strong smell of ammonia.
Crews from Farnworth fire station, an operational support unit from Atherton and a hazardous materials officer attended the scene.
The area was cordoned off while air testing took place and residents were asked to stay inside and close all doors and windows as firefighters carried out an assessment.
Claire Dodd, aged 38, of Blackleach Avenue, said: “I was babysitting and I could smell ammonia very strongly inside the house — the first thing I did was call the parents of the children I was babysitting to collect them.
“The top of the road was blocked off and we were told to stay indoors — there was a lot of commotion.”
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, added: “It was awful — you could feel your eyes and throat burning, there were a lot of people panicking and running up and down the road.
“They told everyone to stay indoors but a lot of people didn’t take their advice and stayed outside.”
Farnworth firefighters directed crews from Agecroft and Eccles stations to an industrial estate in Kearsley, where an ammonia leak was discovered at the bakery.
An engineer at the firm had already isolated the leak and firefighters went in to check the it had been stopped and take readings.
The crews were satisfied the leak had been stopped and left the scene at about 3am.
Farnworth station manager Jon Crawley said: “A lot of work went into establishing what the cause and it was a tough job because it was spread over such a big area.
“While it was a complex situation, we kept resources and disruption down to the minimum while making sure we did everything we could to work with partners to resolve it as soon as possible.”
Noone at Peter Hunt’s bakery was available for comment.
