A PROLIFIC crook found in a cupboard in an empty house claimed he had run inside to hide from the police.
Burnley Crown Court heard how when two officers had arrived at the property on Napier Street, Nelson, they discovered another man and drug addict Mark Sumner — who had with him in the cupboard two pieces of copper piping, a pair of gloves, a wrench multi-tool and torch.
The boiler at the house had been removed and the piping came from radiators in the back room.
Sumner, who has a record for break-ins at homes and other properties, is now back behind bars, this time for eight months.
The defendant, 40, of no fixed address, had admitted burglary on March 21 and had been on remand since May 20.
David Macro, prosecuting, said the house normally had a tenant. A neighbour called police when she heard noises at about 10.50pm.
