Crowds set to flock to Bank Holiday music festival
This is the third year that the event, Fox Fest, is being organised by Janis Brooks, who runs the Fox and Stork in Halliwell, and she hopes that this year will be the biggest yet.
Last year the event raised £3,000 — double what they made the year before.
Mrs Brooks, aged 53, is organising the event with husband Graham, aged 55, staff and customers to help raise money for Bolton Hospice after overcoming breast cancer in 2010.
She said: “When we took the pub over we wanted to bring the community together, and it seems to have worked through Fox Fest.
“It’s looking like it’s going to be even bigger this year — and people have been so helpful donating scaffolding for the stage and we have a marquee for the beer tent. All we’re missing now is the portaloos and it’ll be a proper festival.
“We decided to donate the money to the hospice because I survived breast cancer and we have family and friends that spent their last weeks being cared for there.
“The staff at the hospice give so much of themselves, it’s amazing the work they do. So I thought they deserve the funds more than anyone.”
The idea came after chatting to a customer not long after they took the pub over in 2010 and it has grown year on year.
Mrs Brooks said: “A good friend of ours, Vinny Taylor, said we should put on a battle of the bands music festival over the bank holiday at the back of the pub where there’s lots of space that was going to waste.
“It was a lot smaller in the first year and then last year it went a bit mad and we doubled the money we raised from the year before.
“We’ll have a day of live music, a beer tent for the grown ups and face painting and a bouncy castle for the kids.
“All we ask is a £3 donation on the door.”
Helen Cannell, community fundraising assistant at Bolton Hospice added: “We are very grateful for the continued support that we receive from the Fox and Stork, both from the staff and their customers, and we are very happy that the music festival will be taking place once again in aid of Bolton Hospice.”
