THEY’RE outselling One Direction in their home town – and now Clitheroe Pop Choir wants even more people to share in their success.
The choir, formed in 2010, is celebrating the end of a successful term of singing and CD sales as they go into a summer break.
Founder Sue Sykora said the success of the choir was something she hadn't foreseen.
She said: “It's been a complete shock. Townsend Records in Clitheroe said that they sold more copies of our signed CD than number one singles by One Direction.”
The choir’s CD, Everybody Shine, consists of original music commemorating the Queen’s Jubilee written by Sue.
It was professionally recorded in the Clitheroe Grand and earlier this year, the Queen sent the choir a letter in recognition of their efforts.
The Pop Choir has become extremely important to the community with more than 70 regular members aged 18 to 80 and has made regular donations to Child Action North West.
Jackie Spurgeon has been a member since the start and said that it had been a really positive experience.
She said: “It puts you out of your comfort zone but it makes you feel really good. You come home from rehearsals on a high.
“I’ve done more things with the choir in the past three years than I have done in my whole life.”
Yvonne Fuller, 67, who has also been a member since the first meeting said: “Singing is the one thing I’ve always wanted to do. No-one can disrupt my singing on a Thursday.
“It’s the first thing on my calendar.”
The Clitheroe Pop Choir begins its new term on September 19 with new members welcome. Anyone wishing to join should call Sue Sykora on 07561 531655 for details. The three-track CD is available to buy from Dawson’s in Clitheroe.
