Police HQ will be bulldozed in autumn

THE death knell will soon be sounding for one of Bury’s most well-known buildings.
In June, 2010, the borough’s police force left the ageing headquarters in Irwell Street in the town centre for a new £16 million base in Castlecroft Street.
Since then the Irwell Street building has stood unused, except for the occasional film crew who have made use of its 1970s architecture and shot scenes for 1970s-era police dramas there.
This week, Bury Council chiefs gave the go-ahead for the building to be demolished.
The bulldozers are set to move in on October 21 and finish their work on January 10 next year, when the site will be cordoned off.
In April, it was revealed that the council wants to build a supermarket on the site , although no firm plans have been tabled.
