TRAMS and trains through Bury and into Manchester are delayed this morning because of a lightning strike at Manchester Piccadilly station.

A signalling depot at Queens Road in Manchester was hit by lightning, causing problems across the Metroling network, while Network Rail said train services could be delayed by up to 60 minutes.

A Northern Rail spokesman said: “At about 11am the decision was taken to re-open Manchester Piccadilly and we are hoping to get services up and running by lunchtime — hopefully between 12 and 2pm.

“But we must remind people that these delays have been running since 7am so there will be a massive backlog of trains and crews displaced across the region and we would ask customers who are aiming to travel by train this afternoon to take into account the delays that will occur as we attempt to get back to normal.”
