TRAFFIC calming measures could be introduced in a Burnley village following a crash which left a teenager fighting for his life.

Cliviger with Worsthorne councillor David Hegin-botham has asked the parish clerk to write to Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for transport expressing residents' con-cerns about traffic speeds.

He will ask for a flashing amber light to be sited on Brownside Road, Worsthorne, at its junction with Heckenhurst Avenue.

It is hoped the sign would encourage drivers to slow down on Brownside Road, Extwistle Road and Ormerod Street.

Villagers started a safety campaign after teenager Daniel Wimbles was seriously injured in an accident on Brownside Road in September.

A petition calling for speed restrictions in the village has attracted scores of names.

Daniel, 16, is recovering in Hope Hospital, Salford.

Denis Howard, owner of the Premier Village Store, Church Square, has a copy of the petition in his shop.

Mr Howard said: "There have been a few occasions over the past couple of years where there have been serious accidents.

"I remember a taxi running over a girl and another young girl was knocked down.

"Something does need to be done to prevent it from happening again."

Coun Heginbotham said: "We have asked for a speed sign to try and discourage the speeding drivers, which is real problem."

The county council will consider the request before making a decision in the near future.
