BLACKBURN College students have been putting their brains in gear and testing an environmentally friendly car.

As part of their studies Motor Vehicle Level 3 apprentices have looking at a hybrid rally car - a six-year-old Honda Insight which uses fuel-efficient technology giving off minimum CO2 emissions.

Developed by Cockerham-based engineering company Oaktec, the car can be run on Bio-Ethanol, a renewable fuel which can be made from all sorts of plant matter including grain, sugar cane, sugar beet, straw or even wood waste.

Students, led by course leader Ray Byrne, carried out emission tests on the car to compare the use of petrol with the greener alternative.
