AN inquest has been opened and adjourned following the death of a male teacher who decided to live as a woman.

Nathan Upton, 32, who went through a ‘transition’ to become Lucy Meadows at Christmas, was found dead at her home in Ramsbottom Street, Accrington, last week.

An inquest at Blackburn Register Office heard the St Mary Magdalen’s CE Primary School teacher’s body was found by her estranged wife Ruth Smith.

Coroner Michael Singleton told the short hearing: “I understand there have been previous attempts to commit suicide. I don’t know if they are relevant or not.”

He asked for various reports to be completed to establish a cause of death, before the inquest is resumed on May 28.

  • Last night hundreds of people staged a protest outside a national newspaper office in London calling for a columnist to be sacked over an article he wrote about Lucy Meadows.

More than 100,000 people have also signed an online petition calling for the columnist to be fired.
