A YOUNG whippet-type dog was found in a back yard in an emaciated state.
Blackburn magistrates heard the dog, called Chunk, had not eaten anything for a week and had only had scraps during the three weeks leading up to it condition being reported to the RSPCA.
And they banned the man responsible for the dog’s care from keeping any animal for the next 10 years.
Daniel Edward Cassidy, 23, of Maudsley Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering and failing in his duty to ensure the animal’s welfare. As well as the ban he was ordered to pay £100 costs.
Chris Wyatt, prosecuting, said there was no food or water in the back yard of the house in Maudsley Street where the five month old dog was being kept in filthy conditions without any shelter.
When Chunk was examined by a vet he was found to be only half the weight he should have been.
Colleen Dickinson-Jones, defending, said Cassidy had bought the dog for his girlfriend and he had been left with it when they split and she left the house.
“He was very angry that she left the dog with him and says he asked her several times to come and get it,” said Mrs Dickinson-Jones.
“At the time he couldn’t afford to feed himself and he realises now that he should have contacted the RSPCA.
“Whatever was going on in his life it wasn’t the animals fault and he should have done something about it.”
