Volunteers invited to Burnley canal spruce up

A RUN-down and overgrown section of canal is set for a spruce-up during a community action day later this month.

The Burnley Canal Communities Project has organised the afternoon on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 12.30pm.

The group, which works to uphold the heritage of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Burnley, will be working on the Lowbank canal area at the end of Thurston Street, and new volunteers are welcome.

The project is working to transform this area into somewhere where visitors can sit and enjoy the canal.

It could be said that it’s just a reflection of the living areas surrounding it. Run down awaiting a miracle in most cases. It’s such a shame and hope that by cleaning up parts of the Leeds Liverpool canal may get others to do the same elsewhere. The whole canal could be such a beautiful stretch of water and can never be replaced. Blackburn is no better. The canal needs to be kept clear, clean and beautiful to persuade others to keep their own environment the same. The Leeds Liverpool Canal and it’s surrounding areas should compliment one another. But unfortunately in some areas it does just that!
