Speakers talk their way to wins at Burnley Festival

YOUNG people who have a way with words took their turn in the spotlight during the speech categories of the Burnley Festival.
Isaac Abbs-Brown won the Lawrence Herbert Trophy at the annual event, staged at Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, for his efforts in verse.
He triumphed in the ‘verse speaking from memory’ section, with his recital of ‘Conversation Piece’.
The George Fenton and Annis Watson Award, for proficiency in proclaiming Shakespearan works, went to Isacc Rowan.
Earlier, he had won in the 13 to 15-year-old category for the Bard’s works and received a trophy and £10 book token.
Prizes were awarded in just under 30 classes, ranging from mime, sonnet, newsreading and Bible recital to nursery rhymes, comedy and storytelling.
The musical sections of the festival will be staged over two days this weekend at the same venue.
