A MAN who plummeted 80ft from a town centre multi-storey car park killed himself, an inquest has found.

Mohammed Shaffak, 23, jumped from the roof of the Accrington Arndale Centre after losing his job in a British Gas call centre and starting to smoke cannabis.

Mr Shaffak, of Charter Street, Accrington, was described by his brother Mohammed as “intelligent” and “caring”.

The inquest heard he had a strong work ethic but started mixing with “the wrong crowd” after he was made redundant.

Mr Akram said: “He began to smoke cannabis but was still looking for work. He began to cause problems at the family home and and we could all tell something was not right. I was in complete shock when I heard of his death. There had been no indication and the news would just not sink in.”

Mr Akram said he felt his brother had not received the support he needed from medical professionals to help with his drug use.

The inquest found that Mr Shaffak suffered massive internal injuries in the fall on November 15.

Elaine Block, deputy coroner for Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley, said evidence from pathologist Dr Richard Prescott revealed the impact of the fall had damaged his heart, causing internal bleeding.

Mrs Block said: “The only conclusion I can draw is that Mohammed Shaffak killed himself. He jumped from the sixth floor of the Accrington Arndale Centre, sustaining injuries from which he died.

“It seems the only people who do not suffer in these incidents are the people that supply the drugs.”
