Darwen set to get twin town in Africa (From This Is Lancashire)

So was this put to a vote for the people of Darwen.
I see the poverty line is $1.25 a day so there are some things in common.

No doubt our councillors will be planning their trips to Gambia and the people of Darwen will be expected to pay for it. If they want to swan off to Gambia let them pay for it

There are no perks in DTC, no expenses paid and the Councillors even have to pay for their own meal at the Veteran's Freedom of the Town awards so you can rest assured that your Council Tax precept is not being spent on jollies.

Whilst I supported the Football Gambia Team as a councillor I can see no Benefits for Darwen in Twinning. What is the cost To us going to be?

I thought Darwen was already twinned with somewhere, going back about 20 years when it was all the rage. Does this mean its now triplets?

Never really understood the reasons behind this 'twinning' idea but I thought they took two towns who were "similar" .....

Hardly 'owt. Lettering on signposts will cost a pittance.

Ironically 'For Darwen' was all in favour of setting up a town council costing us all an average of £12 extra on our Council Tax. The 'twinning' will cost virtually nothing yet they are moaning !

and as i remember english rose was dead set against DTC - but now his lot are in a majority - it now seems like a really great idea.

i like to remind a certain councillor about a book written by george orwell called animal farm - where the animals kick out the humans and form their own democratic community for the animals, by the animals - but gradually a true pecking order emerges and the pigs led by napoleon take over and use the mantra "four legs good two legs better" - but the councillor doesn't think the town's electorate would understand or be interested in the metaphor.

My mistake about the £500 - still £1,000 for a stupid mascot £500 to name it - = £1500 total. £1,000 to gambia out of dtc budget for what benefit to the town (which it amazingly now twinned with.

What on earth has political affiliation got to do with it ? Is it the fault of Darwen Town Council if no 'independents' stand as candidates ? And if someone with political affiliation stood and won in Goldshaw Booth then that's up to the electorate. I can guarentee that Goldshaw Booth will have a pre-arranged agenda too (usually set by the Chair / Clerk). Meetings do not start with no agenda. Indeed any Councillor on DTC can put an item on the Agenda. Goldshaw Booth is likely to be the same.
I repeat my question - was Goldshaw Booth set up in a referendum ? You have no real issue with it ?? So are you for or against it ?? You are against Darwen Town (parish) Council but for Goldshaw Booth parish Council ?? Terribly inconsistent argument.

You know full well that the position of the majority party on DTC was that we would support the will of the electorate in the referendum. The vote was 'YES' - so we are now in favour of the TC. Those voting 'NO' have to accept the will of the people and now get on running a TC for the benefit of people in Darwen.
