Private hospital in Blackburn gets one-star food hygiene rating

A PRIVATE hospital has been told it needs ‘major improvement’ to its food hygiene standards following an inspection.

Health inspectors from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) gave Beard-wood Hospital just one star out of five after the inspection in September.

Since then the hospital said issues raised by the inspectors had been addressed.

The FSA looks at how well the business is meeting the law by looking at how hygienically the food is handled, the condition of the struc-ture of the buildings and how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.

Beardwood Hospital, in Preston New Road, is operated by BMI Healthcare. On the hospital’s website it said: “Our commitment is to quality and value, providing facilities for advanced surgical procedures together with friendly, professional care.

“BMI The Beardwood Hospital has 18 single rooms offering the privacy and comfort of en-suite facilities, satellite TV and telephone.

“A seven bed day care unit and a high dependency unit, combined with the latest in technology and support services, enable our consultants to undertake a wide range of procedures from routine investigations to complex surgery.”

Prices for operations at Beardwood Hospital include £1,900 for hernia repair, £4,200 for prostate surgery, £8,900 for hip replacements and £9,500 for knee replacements.

A spokesman for BMI Healthcare said: “The process issues raised by the inspectors have been addressed and as a further measure we are taking forward plans for a full kitchen refurbishment.”

Scores on the doors scheme gives an incorrect impression of any establishment complying with food hygiene regulations according to standards set by the food standard agency. But because relevant records are either not kept or up to date which are time consuming for any operator which may simply be temperature storage records, any organistion will fall foul to this pathetic system dreamt up by the lunatics in Brussels. The sooner this headache is phased out personnels can then continue to provide an excellent service which no doubt would be in no dispute and the basic principle of any successful body, and concentrate on the more important and necessary factors which may place the safety of the public in jeopardy.
This will then result in enviromental officers visiting such places less often which then will result in savings for local authorities which many are so desperate to meet!

Amazing how an article on possible poor hygiene standards is quickly converted to an advertisement for this private hospital. If the LT publishes a similar article on a take-away establishment will they also print the menu?

sen c ble says... Seems to me if someone cannot be bothered to keep essential basic records such as temperature control they are not managing their business very well and ultimately putting members of the public at risk. Such businesses/premises should be inspected more, not less.

The score gives a reasonable overview of standards at food premises and 1 star is very poor.

Maintaining records are basically making notes that health inspectors could refer to whilst carrying out inspection of an establishment. These would consist of when such activity was carried out, and the type of chemicals used to sanitise and clean equipment, walls and floors and all relevant necessary items used in the processing and preparing of food. Even though organisations will be approved and passed it's hygiene inspection if records are not entered when they were cleaned, establishments will score poorly and will be regarded as 'not complying'!
Now, for records in relation to temperature evidence, notes are to be made in the morning, midday and late afternoon. This would mean an A4 size paper besides refrigerators or freezers, and whilst a personnel walks pass this equipment, they are to jot down the temperature according to the dispay and the time they were noted. In the event of a food contamination the health officer would request these notes which would show the temperature food was stored prior to be being prepared. Basically it is a check system for quality and accuracy and not at all hygiene related and really it's only been in force for the past 5 years.
The Fat Duck, opearted by Heston Blumenthal was awrded three Michelin stars and was named the best restaurant in the world in the list of the Worlds 50 Best Restaurants, and despite being awarded such high prestigious awards and rated very highly by health officials and rated 5 stars, which is infact an extremely good achievement and to be honest absolute perfection, the restaurant suffered the biggest outbreak of norovirus with over 400 diners falling unwell.
Another exmple is the highly rated Raymond Blanc restaurant where lamb's liver was served uncooked leaving two diners ill with food poisoning and risked killing diners.

Personally I would line up those in Brussels along a concrete wall and shoot the idiots who thought of this pathetic idea whilst on their 'kin tea break and if that I didn't suceed I would force then to swallow the 'Blanc Special'!

As one who has been a victim of another BMI hospital, I can see why the poor standards were allowed to exist by an undertaking whose primary objective is to make a profit and not patient care.
I wasn't a private patient but sent by the NHS due to lack of capacity at a NHS hospital. Worst experience of my life. Long live the NHS.
