Family rescued from house blaze by neighbours
1:50pm Sunday 20th January 2013 in News
THE heroic actions of neighbours who helped rescue three children from a burning house have been praised by firefighters.
Crews from Leigh, Hindley and Atherton stations were called to a terraced house in Gregory Street, Leigh, at 1.30am yesterday (SUN) following reports of people trapped in a house which was on fire.
When they arrived firefighters used a nine metre high ladder to rescue a 29-year-old woman and a child from the front bedroom of the house, and helped her 29-year-old partner to flee by guiding him down the stairs.
Three other children had already been rescued from the front window by neighbours using a ladder.
The couple and their children, aged two, six, eight and 10, were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.
Firefighters said the blaze had been caused by an unattended chip pan and although a smoke alarm was fitted, it did not go off soon enough because it was incorrectly fitted.
The house suffered “significant” smoke damage and the kitchen was destroyed.

Citizen Cane, your petty minded comments about the supposed state of the family's finances are completely uncalled for.

If a family is self-supporting financially then they can have 500 children. If the taxpayer is funding it then it is very relevant and appropriate, indeed the issue has been discussed in parliament. Or are you saying that taxpayers should empty their wallets to an endless degree and not question the use to which their contribution is put?
I believe that taxpayers have every right to be aware of how their taxes are being applied, especially in the dire straits that the country finds itself. If we have a family here that is bingeing on benefits and then calling upon the emergency services as a result of seeming negligence then that is a very pertinent cause for concern. Should people not be responsible for their actions or lack of safety awareness? What about the potential impact on neighbours, should they not be considered?
From an environmental perspective, one of the biggest world issues is overpopulation and overpopulation is caused by regenerating much beyond two children.
Who knows, perhaps they are lottery winners and are self-funding? In which case a donation in gratitude to the emergency services or a relevant charity would be in order.
This report is a non-story: limited property damage was caused by seeming carelessness, nobody was killed or seriously harmed. An escape option was available via the stairs, so it amounts to hysterical reporting. The real stories lie elsewhere. Wake-up and smell the coffee.

By definition there appeared to be negligence over the cause of this fire.

Am glad to hear that you sympathise with the family who were probably terrified.
It clearly is an accident, but even if it wasn't you are in no position to comment regarding the families status given you know nothing about them.
Hopefully you never have or never will experience something as terrifying as a fire, but I suspect you have strict supervision strategies in place.
