A SPAR shop in Padiham Road, Burnley, was severely damaged by a fire last night.

Crews from East Lancashire’s four main stations in Burnley, Nelson, Blackburn and Accrington were called to the blaze just before 11pm.

When they arrived the building was well alight and one person had to be rescued from the roof of the shop using an aerial ladder platform.

A number of nearby homes were evacuated because of the smoke.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing this morning.

It was all over facebook last night that some idiot petrol bombed this store "for a bet" and was arrested shortly afterwards. If true I hope he is convicted of arson and endangering life and is locked up for a long time!
Just glad the poor sod who had to escape onto the roof was rescued, this would have been national news otherwise.

Tesco might be 'just down the road' but this Spar was busy all the time and used by most everyone round and about. If the arsonist was the idiot on the roof, they should have left him there!
I feel sorry for all those who have lost their jobs and hope the store is up and running again soon.

Tesco might be 'just down the road' but if you're old and have no car it might as well be on the moon.
