Bakery closure will cause 55 redundancies

BOLTON family bakery Warburtons is shedding more than 50 jobs at its Blackpool factory.

Workers at the Fylde coast factory were officially told 55 of them will lose their jobs this week after the firm made the “difficult decision” to cease production at the site.

The company has confirmed a further 16 workers have found alternative jobs or will be re-deployed by Warburtons when the factory shuts on January 31, while two have taken early retirement.

Geoff Atkinson, from the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union, said: “The workers were expecting the worst and the worst came.”

Jonathan Warburton, company chairman and chief executive, said the last year had been “particularly challenging”.

He added: “Closing a bakery is the hardest decision our family business has to make.

“The last year has been particularly challenging due to a number of changeable factors, including further pressure on household budgets and an increasingly competitive market. ”

Production at the factory will stop a week before it officially closes, on January 25.

One of the (changeable factors) could be the fact some people are to lazy to make a butty, they would rather eat tainted takeaway. An old joke of my dad,he used to say we have no bread left, you'll have to have toast.

On the subject of bakeries, why had Bolton council allowed the Pound Bakery to infiltrate shop premises next to two Greenhaulgh's? One on the main square and the other near the market?

Are the council trying to lose Greenhaulgh's also?

I love warburtons products, especially the thins.
Six in a pack they can be eaten plain or toasted, with savoury or sweet filling of your choice.
If everyone tried them the bakery in Blackpool would never have to close.

So, go on boltonians keep our bakeries open by buying Warburtons Thins.
Yum-yum.

You'll pay for what you get. I visited one of the Pound Bakeries once, binned 80% of what I'd bought but still encountered 100% of the indigestion. Absolutely awful stuff. I blame myself.

its only like takaways to open next to each other.and also warburtons is over priced people will only buy what they can afford and what they want,so the only way is for the greedy warburtons to compete better.

Couldn't agree more, brought up on warbys but it got expensive and stale in the supermarkets (the old trick of the breadman to walk round the van then put the returns back on the shelf and sell the fresh stuff to a local corner shop?) Drop the price like every other company has had to do has had to do.
Or maybe you are planning on buying the wanderers a new defence?

To be fair on Warburton’s, they have spent a lot of money investing in new super plants, at Bolton, Bristol and Wakefield over the last few years. Brinwell Road at Blackpool is like something from another era, and only makes bread roles. What 55 people at Blackpool make in a week, a few robots in Wakefield will knock out in a few hours keeping the costs to the bread buying public down.
